The Gerrit Rietveld Academy is looking for a:

Head of DOGtime, 28 hours per week (0.7 FTE), including 4 hours of teaching

The organisation

The Gerrit Rietveld Academy is a small-scale, independent, internationally oriented university of applied arts for fine art and design. The Academy is characterised by research-based and experimental art education. Heads of department, lecturers, workshop specialists, students and staff jointly shape the form and content of teaching and research.

Diversity and inclusion, accessibility, ecology and transparency are key priorities for the Academy and therefore serve as guiding principles for the actions of members of the academic community.

Students at the Rietveld Academy come from 55 different countries, making the Academy a diverse community.

The day-to-day running of the Academy is in the hands of the Executive Board and the Director of Undergraduate Studies and Workshops, the Director of Postgraduate Studies and Research, and the Director of Operations. The Academy has approximately 350 staff members.

As the current head is reaching retirement age, we are seeking a new head for the special DOGtime department, to open a new chapter.

The DOGtime department

DOGtime is the Rietveld Academy’s part-time Bachelor’s programme. The curriculum is challenging, critical and forward-thinking, offering a solid foundation for beginners and in-depth study for advanced students. The DOGtime student community comprises around 90 students, who, drawing on a wide variety of life experiences, have chosen to embark on a career as artists. Many of the students work in a wide range of fields alongside their studies. The students’ ages range from 20 to 60, with an average age of around 30.

The teaching team comprises around 25 artists, curators, researchers and writers who are passionate about educating this specific group. The head of department is supported by a department coordinator, and all the academy’s administrative departments naturally also support DOGtime.

The DOGtime programme lasts five years: two foundation years and three years of specialisation, during which students can choose between the specialisations ‘Expanded Painting’ and ‘Unstable Media’. Classes take place in the evenings from 6.45 pm to 9.45 pm.

You can find more information about the programme here: https://dogtime.rietveldacademie.nl/

What will you be doing, amongst other things?

  • You will combine your own perspective on the constantly evolving developments within art and art education with the discourse of contemporary visual art, and translate this into educational content and teaching methods.
  • You will lead the teaching team.
  • You will create an inclusive, safe and inspiring learning and working environment.
  • You will plan and organise teaching, assessment and marking, the deployment of teaching staff, and the department’s alignment with academy-wide programmes. You will be supported in this by a department coordinator.
  • You are responsible for the department’s budget.
  • You clearly communicate the department’s core values, both within the department, at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and beyond.
  • You will take part in consultations and work alongside the other heads of department, the support departments and the director.
  • You will contribute to the overall development of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy.
  • Delivering teaching or other educational activities forms part of this role.
  • You will be present at the academy two days a week – with Wednesday being the preferred fixed day – and at flexible times where necessary, for example for open days, exams, assessments, etc.

What is your profile?

  • You are an artist with a strong affinity for, and a broad perspective on, contemporary visual art. At least five years’ professional experience as an artist is essential to fulfil this role with sufficient vision.
  • You have experience in translating developments in the professional field into education, teaching programmes and pedagogy.
  • You have teaching experience and pedagogical skills to create a positive and supportive learning environment for students.
  • A head of department is a leader with organisational talent, someone who nurtures and contributes to the development of a teaching team. Good people skills are therefore important:
  • You strengthen a close-knit team by making the most of individual strengths, organising consultation and knowledgesharing, discussing progress, improving collaboration and considering the feelings, needs and backgrounds of others.
  • You tailor your leadership style to the capabilities, wishes and circumstances of staff members by making specific agreements, offering support and feedback, and being open to mutual feedback.
  • You have the sensitivity to value diversity, recognise prejudices, promote inclusivity and create a working environment in which everyone feels treated equally and respected – whilst recognising that this is an ongoing process rather than a static state.
  • You can work within existing structures, guidelines and processes, considering the broader objectives and context of the Academy and the relationships between departments.
  • You can analyse developments, put forward innovative proposals, set out long-term directions and motivate others to contribute and collectively expand a vision – whilst collaborating with the core team and students, and at the same time showing care and attention to individual perspectives and needs. You have an active national and international network that can help expand and develop the department’s remit and establish links with relevant institutions.
  • You cope well with changes in priorities or circumstances, seek alternative solutions when things do not go as expected, and are open to new perspectives.
  • You can reflect on your own performance and that of the organisation, and you use feedback and new insights to drive development.
  • If you are not a national of an EU Member State, you must hold the appropriate residence and work permits.
  • You are resident in the Netherlands or are willing to take up residence there.

Diversity

We strive for diversity and recruit colleagues from groups that are currently under-represented in our education sector. Where candidates are equally suitable, we give preference to a candidate who enhances diversity within our team.

  • Attractive fringe benefits include an end-of-year bonus of 8.3 per cent, a very generous number of annual leave days, leave arrangements and development opportunities such as coaching, teaching qualification programmes and Dutch language courses.
  • Travel expenses are reimbursed from 10 kilometres.
  • We offer a one-year contract, with the intention of converting this to a permanent position after a maximum of two years, subject to suitability.
